Redfern Stormco report
STORMCO stands for "Service To Others Really Matters".
July 14-18 of this year, 30 young people from Fox Valley and Mt Druitt SDA churches joined forces at The Way in Redfern to run a stormco, serving the inner Sydney Redfern community.
Located at the The Block, top of Eveleigh St across from Redfern station, The Way was the home for this stormco trip running Monday thru to Friday. We began the day with breakfast for everyone, graciously provided by Sanitarium the Health Food Company. After breakfast the kid's club ran, then lunch was prepared for anyone who wanted to come in and get a feed, then back to work at the Mundiene gym.
Kid's club:
Kid's club ran from 9am-12pm with children between the ages of 2-12 attending. Group's Fiesta VBS program was the model for our kid's club which integrated the daily Bible point with activites of music, drama and puppets, craft, and games to help the children learn about Jesus. The crafts were a big hit, not only with the kids, but even the older folk at Redfern. Games and songs were a highlight for the kids, a chance to run off some of their energy!
Each day at Fiesta, there were Bible points that theme the program for the day.
Day 1: Jesus is our friend
Day 2: Jesus is our life
Day 3: Jesus is our leader
Day 4: Jesus is our saviour
Day 5: Jesus is our helper.
At the end of the week kids were doing the actions along to the songs and remembering the themes for each day. Each kid who came to kid's club were given a Redfern Stormco shirt specially designed with Aboriginal colours.
Community project:
As a Stormco team from 1pm-3:30pm we cleaned out the store room garage under the Mundiene gym, and gave the bathroom, kitchen, old mother's clinic, hall way, and main room a fresh coat of paint. With 4 rollers and 4 paintbrushes going at once, the large task was achieved well with barba shop style singing helping to pass the time.
How to STILL be involved at Redfern:
Although Stormco is over, our presence does not have to be. Each Sabbath afternoon there are services run at the Way for the community in Redfern, beginning at 3pm all are welcome to attend and lend a helping hand preparing lunch, talking to the people and praising God.
Our Stormco of service to others was fully blessed by God the Father. He was always walking infront of us everywhere we went, softening the hearts of the people at Redfern. The response from the people was very positive, as mums, dads, uncles and aunties continually encouraged us to keep going and that what we were doing for the kid's was so great.
Prayers are still needed for the people at Redfern. So many lives are controlled by alcohol, heroin, marijuana and cocaine. At the moment God is working on lives of people out there. Families are leaving the block to live in a better environment. Please continue to keep Redfern and the people in your prayers as we as a church and body of Christ minister to them, sharing His love and hope.
